Tradition & Belief

India is the birthplace of major religions and traditions; Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Jainism began here. A deeply spiritual nation it embraces many religions that mostly coexist harmoniously.

Religious tolerance has been ingrained in India’s culture throughout its long history. In the 3rd century BC Emperor Ashoka honoured all religious belief, and this inspired philosophical thread emerged again during the rule of Akbar in the 16th century AD. It continues today.

By far the largest following is to Hinduism, and although the followers of Islam are a minority it still has more than one hundred million devotees. Buddhism and Christianity both have an important and influential place in India’s pantheon of religions, while a communist element in the political theatre perhaps indicates a less devout segment within Indian society.

The evolution of India’s spiritual devotion is evident and reflected in innumerable temples, shrines, mosques and churches throughout the land, with historic timelines and geographic divides illustrated in the variance of architectural and artistic designs. The numerous festivals and celebrations that take place throughout the year underline the depth and intensity of spiritual beliefs. To observe moving centuries-old ceremonies, joyous celebrations or vast visually spectacular processions can add a very special dimension to your exploration of India.

No matter what time you chose to visit India, it is likely that some religious festivals will be taking place and many sacred sites have daily ceremonies. Your choice of sites to visit and festivals to experience is subject only to the itinerary route and your dates of travel. We will be pleased to make suggestions and recommendations when discussing and planning your holiday.
